FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
UNITED WAY OF SUMMIT COUNTY’S
DOCS WHO ROCK IV TO BE
OCTOBER 13
Since its inception in
2004, United Way of Summit County’s ‘Docs Who RockTM,’
a physician talent show, has quickly grown into one of the region’s
‘must see’ productions. Docs Who Rock IV, sponsored by The University
of Akron, will be held at E.J. Thomas Hall on Saturday, October 13,
beginning at 7:00 pm.
Tickets for the show are
available now at the E.J. Thomas box office or at ticketmaster.com for
$12 and $25. For more information, visit
www.docswhorock.com.
The event is an
opportunity for local doctors to showcase their musical talents. After
hold the 2004 event in the 430-seat auditorium at the new Main Library
and the 2005 show at the 800+ seat theatre at North High School, the
committee of United Way volunteers working on Docs Who Rock began
looking for larger venues in which to hold the event. In 2006, the
University of Akron stepped up as sponsor of Docs Who Rock, making it
possible to use beautiful E.J. Thomas Hall.
Dr. Terry Gordon will open
the show with another musical tribute. Over the years, Dr. Gordon has
imitated a variety of pop culture icons, including Rod Stewart, Austin
Powers, Mick Jagger and Tina Turner.
His
character (or perhaps characters) for the 2007 show is a closely guarded
secret. “All I can tell you is, my mother made me promise I wouldn’t
perform in drag again this year,” Dr. Gordon said.
Ten acts
will be competing in the show to be named champion of Docs Who Rock.
Each band features at least one Doctor (M.D. or D.O.) who lives or
practices in Summit County. The acts are: defending champions
Accent featuring Dr. Fred Slezak;
Big Adventure
with Dr. Andrew McIntosh; V-Tach featuring Dr. Tom Javorsky and
Dr. Joe Pietrolungo; Collideascope featuring Dr. Rob Hermanowski;
The House Popes featuring Dr. Eric Jagar;
Sound Advice featuring Dr. Tim
Newman; The Docs of Dixieland featuring Dr. Paul LeCat and Dr.
Debbie Plate; and
Ultrasound
featuring Dr. Akida Green, Dr. George Kefalas, Dr. Costas Kefalas, Dr.
Michael Wells, Dr. Matt Taylor, Dr. Nick Papas, and Dr. Edward Esber;
a duet featuring Dr. Todd Beyer and Dr. Jeff Bachtel and a piano solo by
Dr. Georges Markarian.
United Way
of Summit County President Bob Kulinski said, “The buzz that this event
creates each fall is phenomenal, and the reason is the combination of a
great cause combined with a great show. The performances of Dr. Terry
Gordon, the other physicians and all the talented musicians who donate
their time and talent are outstanding. Everyone who sees this show
feels that they got their money’s worth.”
