Current Volunteer Opportunities

The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area non-profit organizations and other organizations required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation status. The following organizations need volunteers. For details about these and other volunteer opportunities, contact The Volunteer Center, 90 N. Akron Children’s Hospital: Volunteers needed July 18 & 19 to assist with the fourth annual National Hamburger Festival at Lock 3. Minimum age: 18.

Akron Public Schools/Akron Zoo: Volunteers needed between 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. August 11 and/or August 12 to assist with “Back to School at the Zoo” event—volunteer shifts are available. Minimum age: 18.

American Red Cross of Summit and Portage Counties: Volunteers needed evenings and weekends 15-20 hours a month to drive and/or assist driver with picking-up and delivering furniture donations. Minimum age: 21 (driver); 18 (assistant).

Career Nurse Assistants Program, Inc.: Volunteers wanted weekdays to assist with office/clerical needs. Minimum age: 18, 16 with adult supervision.

CASA/GAL Program of Summit County: Volunteer Child Advocates needed to independently investigate and monitor cases of abuse, neglect and/or dependency. Next 30-hour training begins July 20. Registration deadline is July 13.
Two-year commitment. Minimum age: 21.

Cascade Locks Park Association: Volunteers needed between 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, July 18 to assist with the Rubber Duck Derby event. Minimum age: 16, 14 with adult supervision.

City of Akron Recreation Bureau: Volunteers needed between 9 a.m. – 10 p.m., July 23-25 and 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., July 26 to assist with the Akron Arts Expo. Minimum age: 17, 15 with adult supervision.

CYO and Community Services: Volunteers wanted weekdays to perform data
entry and assist with large mailings. Minimum age: 16.

Fair Housing Contact Service: Volunteers needed 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. weekdays two-three days a week to answer multiple phone lines and assist with other office/clerical needs. Minimum age: 16.

Habitat for Humanity of Summit County: Volunteers needed 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Thursdays & Fridays and 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturdays to assist at retail ReStore. Minimum age: 14.

Harbor Light Hospice: Volunteers needed 30 minutes or more once a week to visit and spend time with patients. Minimum age: 18, 17 with adult supervision.

Hattie Larlham Supported Living: Volunteers are needed 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, July 11 to assist with a room makeover (paint and lay non-adhesive carpet squares) for a developmentally disabled individual. Must be able to paint; all materials will be provided. Groups/Families no larger than 6 welcome. Minimum age: 16, 14 with adult supervision.

New Destiny Treatment Center (Clinton): Volunteers wanted to assist with daily meal program. Minimum age: 18, 10 with adult supervision.

Neighborhood Conservation Services of Barberton: Volunteers needed to help paint homes of elderly/disabled residents for annual Paint Your Heart Out event, Saturday, July 25. Minimum age: 13, younger with direct adult supervision.

Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare (Northfield): Volunteers wanted to perform musical, acting, seasonal and holiday presentations. Minimum age: 18.

On a Mission to Manhood: Volunteers needed to mentor males ages 16-22 in a class-room setting Tuesdays through Thursdays mornings/early afternoons. Minimum age: 18.

One of a Kind Pet Rescue: Volunteers needed weekday evenings and weekend days/evenings to perform data entry and assist with mailings. Minimum age: 18.

Pregnancy Care of Summit County: Volunteers wanted weekdays to assist staff in interviewing clients, teaching classes, office/clerical, speaking engagements, etc. Minimum age: 18.

Rape Crisis Center: Volunteers needed for community events; assist with donations; fundraisers, and light clerical needs. Hours and days vary. Minimum age: 18.

Salvation Army of Summit County: Volunteers needed 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. weekdays to assist with agency maintenance and repairs. Minimum age: 18.

St. Thomas Hospital (Summa Health System): Volunteers needed 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Mondays & Thursdays to deliver mail and flowers. Minimum age: 18.

YMCA, Riverfront Family (Cuyahoga Falls): Volunteers needed throughout the week to assist with youth sports programs. Minimum age: 16.
