Current Volunteer Opportunities

The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area non-profit organizations and other organizations required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation status. The following organizations need volunteers. For details about these and other volunteer opportunities, contact The Volunteer Center, 90 N. Akron City Hospital (Summa Health System): Volunteers needed between 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. weekdays to escort patients, provide wheelchair transportation, deliver items to departments and and gather wheelchairs. Minimum age: 18.

Akron Summit Community Action: Volunteers wanted between the hours of 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. weekdays to assist with Head Start classroom activities. Minimum age: 18.

American Red Cross, Summit County: Volunteers needed to train individuals in First Aid, CPR and AED. Minimum age: 18.

Catholic Social Services: Volunteers wanted Tuesday early afternoons and Wednesday evenings to assist with hot meals program. Minimum age: 14, 12 with adult supervision.

City of Akron Recreation Bureau: Volunteers needed 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. June 14 & 15 to assist during “Wings Over Akron, Salute to Akron Aviation Air Show” at the Akron Fulton airport. Minimum age: 18, 10 with adult supervision.

CYO and Community Services: Volunteers needed 9 a.m.-1 p.m. May 17 to participate in Home Service Project 2008 providing assistance to homeowners with spring clean-up, yard work, planting flowers, trimming bushes, raking leaves and cleaning gutters. Minimum age: 18, 13 with adult supervision.

Goodwill Industries of Akron: Volunteers needed weekdays 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. to mentor vocational services participants. Minimum age: 18.

Grandparents against Sex Predators (G.A.S.P.): Volunteers needed to research, write and submit grant proposals to local foundations, companies and organizations. Minimum age: 21.

Hattie Larlham Supported Living: Volunteers wanted 4 hours a month to facilitate bird watching and birding excursions. Minimum age: 18, 16 with adult supervision.

Heartland Home Healthcare & Hospice: Volunteers wanted to visit with hospice patients at home or in nursing homes. Minimum age: 18.

Hospice of Summa: Volunteers needed to prepare and/or provide baked goods, fruit, vegetables, salads, and sandwiches for families of those under Palliative Care Services. Volunteer families or groups welcome.

International Institute of Akron: Volunteer ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Instructor Assistants needed one hour or more 9 a.m.-12 p.m. weekdays, 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Monday or Wednesday evenings to help with instruction and clerical support.

Laurel Lake Retirement Community: Volunteers wanted evenings to answer calls,
direct guests and assist with clerical work. Minimum age: 18

Mobile Meals: Volunteer groups needed on a flexible basis 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. weekdays to deliver meals to homebound individuals. Minimum age: 18.

Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare (Northfield): Volunteers wanted to perform musical, acting, seasonal and holiday presentations. Minimum age: 18.

One of a Kind Pets Rescue: Volunteers wanted to assist with fundraising and special events. Minimum age: 18, 13 with adult supervision.

Rockynol Retirement Community: Volunteers wanted 9 a.m.-Noon and/or 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays to greet and direct visitors to resident’s rooms. Minimum age: 18.

The Packard Institute: Volunteers needed 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. weekdays and 4:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. Saturdays to answer phones and greet guests. Minimum age: 18.

Weathervane Community Playhouse: Volunteers wanted 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and/or 1 p.m.-4 p.m. weekdays to answer phones, take ticket reservations and assist with mailings. Minimum age: 18.

Williard Food Pantry: Seeking volunteers between the hours of 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. the second Monday of each month to assist with food pick-up/unloading. Minimum age: 18, 16 with parent permission.

YMCA, Riverfront Family (Cuyahoga Falls): Volunteers needed 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. weekdays and 9 p.m. – 3 p.m. Saturdays to assist with indoor youth soccer and basketball programs. Minimum age: 16.
