Current Volunteer Opportunities

The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area non-profit organizations and other organizations required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation status. The following organizations need volunteers. For details about these and other volunteer opportunities, contact The Volunteer Center, 90 N. AkronReads (Akron Public Schools): Volunteers needed to tutor 3rd grade students throughout the school year. Minimum age: 18 and a high school graduate.

Alliance for a Healthy Youth: Volunteers needed weekdays to deliver cases of magazines to middle schools. Each case contains 400 magazines, weighs approximately 10-15 lbs., and is approximately 9" x 11" x 11" in size. Minimum age: 16, 13 with adult supervision.

American Red Cross of Summit and Portage Counties: Volunteer Drivers wanted to transport individuals to medically-related appointments. Opportunity is available Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:30am-3pm--must commit to the entire time period--minimum once a week. Agency will provide volunteer training for CPR/First Aid and defensive driving. Volunteer will need a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record. Volunteer will use agency's vehicle. Minimum age is 21.

Autism Society of Ohio Greater Akron Office: Seeking volunteer to assist with the Akron Walks for Autism, a walk and 5k run. Assistance needed June 8 from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. to assist with registration, and June 9 from 6 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. to assist with a variety of needs on event day at Lock 3. Minimum age: 18, 6 with adult supervision.

Battered Women’s Shelter: Volunteers needed daily on a flexible schedule to assist with general needs at the shelter. Also seeking movers to assist with large item donations. Minimum age: 18.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve: Volunteers needed to assist with annual kickball tournament. There are several assignments available from set up & check in to serving as a referee or bracket manager. Minimum age: 16, 14 with adult supervision.

Crown Point Ecology Center: Volunteers needed to assist with our Annual Spring Organic Plant Sale May 18 from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m., May 19 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.; and May 20 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Volunteers will be needed to transport plants from the greenhouses to the Barn and tidy up plant tables as customers purchase plants. Volunteers can be used during the week prior the plant sale to do similar work. Minimum age: 16.

Fair Housing Contact Service: Volunteers needed 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. weekdays two-three days a week to answer multiple phone lines and assist with other office/clerical needs. Minimum age: 16.

Freedom House for Women: Volunteers needed weekdays to assist with scheduling appointments, phone answering, greeting guests/clients; computer experience preferred. Minimum age: 18, 16 with adult supervision.

Friends of Pets: Volunteers needed to assist as adoption counselors & cat foster parents. Also needing volunteers to help with fundraising and grant writing assistance. Minimum age: 18.

Girl Scouts of North East Ohio: Volunteers needed between 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. weekdays, morning and/or afternoon shifts available, to assist at the Girl Scout Boutique retail shop in Macedonia. Minimum age: 18.

Harbor Light Hospice: Volunteers needed 30 minutes or more once a week to visit and spend time with patients. Minimum age: 18, 17 with adult supervision.

Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio Inc.: Seeking volunteers to teach a Junior Achievement Program to students grades K-8th at different elementary schools on May 17 and 25. This is a one day volunteer opportunity beginning when school starts and ending at lunch time. Volunteers can teach a class by themselves or with a partner. Classroom teachers will stay in the classroom to assist our volunteers. Minimum age: 18.

Keep Akron Beautiful: Volunteers teams needed during the month of July to canvass a route in the City to nominate residences, businesses and organizations to receive the Beautification Watch Award for 2012. A one hour training session at end of June is offered and highly recommended especially for new volunteers to this project; lots of tips are offered to make this a successful experience. Opportunity takes about 8 hours in your own car canvassing the one route selected.

Lake Anna YMCA: We are looking for two people to help with our Adults Men 40+ Basketball league. We need one person to help run the game clock. The other person will help keep score and track fouls. Training is provided. Games are held Wednesday nights from 6-9pm. Minimum age: 14.

National MS Society, Ohio Buckeye Chapter: Friendly volunteers needed on a flexible basis from 2-4 hours a month and minimum 1-2 hours per week to visit with individuals that have MS. Minimum age: 21.

Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare: Patient library is in need of updated books and magazines (no older than 3 months) for restocking the Patient libraries. Volunteers would organize and collect items. Pick up can be arranged or volunteers are welcome to deliver and tour the area where the libraries are set up. Minimum age: 18, 16 with adult supervision.

OPEN M: Volunteers are needed weekdays on an as needed basis to fill-in at the front desk/reception area. Shifts available: 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Volunteers will be trained. Minimum age: 18.

Paws & Prayers, Inc.: Volunteer Office Angels needed on a flexible schedule to do clerical work, wash and fold laundry daily, do whatever dishes are in the sink, run errands if able, help keep office cleaning by sweeping, mopping, disinfecting kennels and cat cages and empty trash. Not only will you feel good about the work you do but the animals will pay you back in kisses! Minimum age: 18, 16 with adult supervision.

Salvation Army of Summit County: Volunteers needed on a rotating on-call basis (one week per month) to respond to local emergencies (fires, power outages, etc.) Minimum age: 21.
