All across Summit County
people are Living United! They’re giving to the annual United
Way/Red Cross fundraising campaign to support more than 120
non-profit agency programs promoting education, income and health.
They’re advocating for or against issues they are passionate about —
promoting, enhancing and monitoring public policy. They are also
volunteering in huge numbers to help non-profits become more
cost-effective and results-oriented in meeting the needs of our
community. They are all a part of the Live United Experience.
United Way of Summit County would like to extend sincere thanks to
all those that are Living United. Here are just a few ways your
United Way is engaging our community to expose more people to the
Live United Experience:
Creative Arts Contest
For the fifth
consecutive year United Way of Summit County invited children grades
K-12 living or attending school in Summit County to participate in
the Youth Initiative Creative Arts Contest. The theme to be
illustrated was, "How I LIVE UNITED." UWSC holds this contest to
encourage the younger population to become more aware and active in
the United Way and our community.
Creative Arts Contest Grand Prize winners for 2009 were Stacey
Beasley of Garfield High school, Kamaria Veal of Litchfield Middle
School, and Marissa Hall of Woodford Elementary. Runner-Ups were
Breonna Alexander of Garfield High school, Mercia Stephens of
Litchfield Middle School, and Michael Bellman-Loper of Turkeyfoot
Elementary. Best in Show was awarded to Mai Ker Xiong of Garfield
High school.
Day of Action
United Way of
Summit County held its 14th annual ‘Day of Action’ on Friday,
June 18, 2009. Community volunteers of all ages along with more than
1,200 employees from 56 local businesses took advantage of this
opportunity to get involved and give back to their community. Day of
Action is a day of work and fun to aid more than 100 local nonprofit
health and human service agencies in Summit County. Volunteers help
in the completion of much-needed projects including landscaping,
construction, painting, data entry, cleaning and delivering meals.
In addition to improving our community, employers and employees
often discover that working together on a Day of Action project
enhances communication and fosters teamwork within their company.
