On the morning of August 29, 2005,
Hurricane Katrina landed
on the Gulf Coast of the United States and devastated cities and
ruined lives. Almost 1,200 people died, and millions of lives were
changed forever. But in the aftermath of the storm, young and old
stepped up to help.
Our community sent over $500,000 down to the ravaged areas and for
the 2nd year in a row sent college students to provide help.
Over one year later there is still much to repair, rebuild, and
revive in the area.
Spring Break was the perfect time to give
back and help those in need in the Gulf Coast. United Way of
Summit County assembled a group of local college students to
travel to the Gulf Coast region between March 17th
- March 24th to experience a rewarding week of volunteering
and rebuilding. Students accepted in the program competed with
hundreds of applicants in the nationwide search for youth leaders.
