United
Way's Brian Duchon Returns from ASB 2008
United
Way of Summit County's Brian Duchon recently returned from 10 days
in Lake Charles, Louisiana where he served as a team leader for United Way's
Alternative Spring Break (ASB). ASB is a week long service project designed to
involve young adults in meaningful volunteer service. Over the month
of March, 309 volunteers aged 18-24 came together in three separate
locations, working together to advance the common good. In a landscape that
is still spotted with blue tarp roofs, teams rolled up their sleeves to help
the massive recovery effort in southwest Louisiana.
Brian
attended safety, leadership and conflict resolution training prior to
assuming co-leadership responsibility over a team of 5 volunteers from
across the country ranging from Boston to California. Brian's group along
with two others was assigned to Ms. Lucy's House to repair and replace the
roof along with replacing rotten wood and ceiling tiles. "The most exciting
thing for me was to see this group of young adults, who are interested,
involved and engaged in making a difference in the world around them" said
Brian.
Once all the dust settled,
40 different teams racked up an astounding 12,600 hours of service bringing
the combined total value of service to $285,479! This amount is used for
paying down the regional FEMA debt and goes to show the wonderful value of
volunteers. If you would like more information or would like to become
involved in United Way's Alternative Spring Break next year please contact Brian Duchon at bduchon@uwsummit.org or
call at 330.643.5529.

Need a Will?
United Way of Summit County Can Help!
If you need a Will and have total assets less than
$338,333 --
meaning the total value of your home, cars, insurance policies, IRAs, other
retirement accounts, etc. -- United Way of Summit County can help.
United Way is partnering with LEAVE A
LEGaCY® to sponsor "Write A Will Month" during May 2008. Local
attorneys donate their time to write simple wills at no cost to
eligible individuals.
LEAVE A
LEGaCY® does not solicit gifts or
promote particular organizations, and you will not be asked to make a donation.
The purpose of the program is to encourage everyone without a Will to make one,
and to educate people about the option of leaving something to the charities
that have made a difference in their lives.
If you are eligible and want to
create a new Will or revise a current Will, contact Charlene Corlett at
330.643.5537 or
ccorlett@uwsummit.org. Your response will help us recruit the right
number of attorneys and schedule private meeting rooms.
You have worked hard to
accumulate assets throughout your life. By taking steps now to create a Will,
you are assured that your assets will be distributed to family and loved ones
according to your wishes. |
