First Energy Hosts Softball Tournaments to benefit United Way
Combining three of the company's trademark ideals - team spirit, competitiveness and philanthropy -- FirstEnergy Corporation is holding a softball tournament to benefit United Way.

Regional tournaments have been played at sites all across the Company's multi-state footprint. Here in Akron, 22 teams competed on July 28. The pictures with this article are from that tournament.

After five hard fought rounds, the champion of the Akron Tournament, 'The Snoccers,' earned the right to compete in the Saturday, August 25th, Elite 8 Softball Tournament and Family Fun Day, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Eight regional champions, representing Toledo, Red Bank Area, Cleveland, Altoona, Reading, Erie, East Liverpool and Akron, will battle for the right to be called FirstEnergy/United Way Champion.

The FirstEnergy Foundation will present a check for $1,000 to the winning team's local United Way, so you'll excuse our bias when we say 'Go Snoccers!'

Our sincere thanks to FirstEnergy's United Way Campaign Chair Donny Schneider and impressive team of associates he's assembled to host all the regional tournaments and the Championship bracket.

City of Akron Kicks-Off Campaign
The City of Akron kicked off their Pacesetter campaign, in conjunction with the County of Summit, on Thursday, August 9th with an Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social that was promptly rained out by a huge downpour.  The rescheduled downtown kick-off was then celebrated on Friday, August 10th at Goodyear Park, in front of City Hall, with hotdogs, ice cream and popcorn.

The Triplett Blvd. employees kicked off their campaign on Friday, August 17th also with a lunch social.  Both kickoffs featured fun and games provided by the City of Akron Recreation Bureau and drawings for great prizes.  Thanks to the City of Akron employees for their support of our community and United Way.

Your United Way Donations Improve Lives...

United Way Helps People Attain Independence
There are thousands of stories about people who have received help each year from United Way funded programs. Here's one of them:

Tim is a 34-year-old father of one. He is a high school graduate and he was even able to complete a few semesters of college before financial concerns forced him into the workforce full-time.

Tim worked in various entry level positions including manufacturing and sales/customer service. However, the highest wage he has earned was $10.98 and that was in a machining job in Colorado.

Tim had often cut hair for friends and family since he was a teenager, and it was a skill he had always wanted to get licensed for and do professionally. He had never been able to go to barber school because none of them accepted financial aid.

After arriving in Akron, Tim continued his job search for two months before learning about the WIA training fund assistance offered through Goodwill Industries of Akron. Upon seeking services at Goodwill, he was informed that he did appear to be a good candidate for the WIA (Work Investment Act) services and he worked with his case manager to determine his eligibility and suitability for his desired training field.

Tim was approved for training and enrolled at the Akron Barber College in March of 2006. Goodwill also provided Tim with barbering tools required for class and funds to assist with transportation to school.

Tim completed his training and was eligible to take the Barber Exam. On April 9, 2007 he was officially a licensed barber for the State of Ohio. After obtaining his license, he was successful in obtaining employment as a barber with a shop in Barberton and is doing well in his career. He enjoys his job and has consistently increased his client base which in turn increased his income over the past few months.

Tim is very grateful to United Way and Goodwill Industries, because he would not be where he is today if not for the assistance and training he obtained.

Make Plans for Fun at Chickenfest
United Way of Summit County is hosting the return of 'Chickenfest!TM' to Barberton's Lake Anna Park, Friday September 7, from 5:00 to 10:00 pm and Saturday, September 8, from Noon to 10:00 pm.

Local restaurants participating include DeVore's Hopocan Gardens, Belgrade Garden, Milich's Village Inn, and Hodge's Cafe along with concessionaires Destefano's and Byers.

Entertainment will include the local band 'Accent' on Friday night from 7:00 to 10:00 pm in the Gazebo.  Accent is a local, high-energy top 40 dance band playing hits from the 60s to the present.  They were the winning band at United Way's Docs Who RockTM physician talent show in 2006.

On Saturday night from 7:00 to 10:00 pm, the Gazebo will rock to the sounds of 'The New Flames Band' from Barberton.  These crowd-pleasers play the hits from the 50s and 60s.  There will also be vendors on hand with home-made crafts and other business people displaying and selling their wares.

Matco Tools To Host 4th Annual Amazing Race
Matco Tools is presenting their 4th Annual Amazing Race Road Rally/Scavenger Hunt on Sunday, September 23rd with proceeds benefiting the United Way of Summit County.

Teams will start at the American Red Cross building at 501 W.
