Volunteer Center Makes Holiday Connections
During November and December, employees and groups from Summit County businesses and organizations collected and donated holiday items, volunteered at distribution programs and adopted scores of needy families for holiday giving.

Those that participated, making for a brighter holiday for thousands of people in our community, was a local 4-H Club; Akron Summit Community Action Youth Build; Americhem; Bober, Markey, Fedorovich & Company; CAM, Inc.; Delta Zeta Sorority; EC Ohio/Ewing Cole; Experient, Inc.; FirstEnergy Corporation; local Girl Scout troops; Goodrich Corporation De-Icing & Specialty Systems; Hudson Middle School; IKON Document Efficiency; JCPenney at Montrose; Kent State University Graduate Management Associates; Kiwanis Club of Akron; Lexi-Comp; OHDELA National Junior Honor Society; OMNOVA Solutions; Rockwell Automation;  Snelling Personnel Services; Stow-Munroe Falls High School Cooperative Business Education; Stow-Munroe Falls High School Senior Class Executive Committee; Theken Disc; United Way of Summit County; URS Corporation; West Side Leader and Western Reserve Academy.

Of course, these are just the businesses and organizations that utilized the United Way Volunteer Center to match them with their opportunity.  Many found volunteer opportunities on their own.  This is another example of the outstanding generosity of those in Summit County!

The 2008 Class of Project Blueprint Gets Underway
Project Blueprint, United Way's minority leadership development program, started the year with a reception at Akron General Medical Center's Conference Center.  This year's class of 22 is one of the largest classes since we began the program.  "The number of people applying this year is a testament to how well this program has been received in the community," says Margaret Williams, chair of the Project Blueprint Advisory Committee and UW Board member.

The classes each week help prepare the individuals for the types of situations they will face as members of boards and committees:  Team Building, Effective Communications and Financial Management of Non-Profit Organizations, just to name a few.  The 10 weekly sessions will conclude with an Agency Fair on Thursday, March 23 at the American Red Cross.  This is an opportunity for the class to get a sampling of the organizations looking for board members and for agencies to see what outstanding candidates there are available through Project Blueprint.  If you are interested in more information about the program, contact Brenda Cox at 330.643.5508 or bcox@uwsummit.org.

Campaign News
Summit County Children Services Thanks Community Through United Way
A great applause to everyone at the Children Services Board for their tireless support of our community as demonstrated through their increased campaign, which raised approximately $8,000 over last year!

"Last November, the residents of Summit County showed their great confidence in our agency by resoundingly passing a critical operating levy. I felt that asking our staff to contribute generously to United Way would be a great way to say 'Thank You' to the community for the passage of our levy -- and at the same time help support services that may prevent child abuse and neglect," said Summit County Children Services Executive Director John Saros. "As you can imagine, when our campaign came to a close, we were very gratified indeed by our staff's outpouring of generosity."
