City of Akron 'Soup-er Bowl' Benefits United Way
Last Sunday, the City of Akron hosted the inaugural 'Soup-er Bowl -- Soup Throwdown' at beautiful Lock 3 Park in Downtown Akron. The proceeds from this fun event were donated to United Way of Summit County.

Nicole Read of the Akron Recreation Bureau created and executed the Soup-er Bowl, including arranging for all the participating restaurants, and we're extremely grateful for all her hard work. Thanks also to Mayor Don Plusquellic and Deputy Mayor Dave Lieberth for making this event possible.

The people's choice winner was the Twice-Baked Potato Soup from Kevin O'Brian's Pub. Other prize winners were:
  • Meatiest - Ivan's Chili
  • Most Traditional - Lockview's Wedding Soup
  • Spiciest - Chin's Hot & Sour Soup
  • Best Vegetable Medley - Diamond Deli's Wild Rice Soup
  • Most Creative - Ido's Chicken Pot Pie Soup
  • Best Variety - Panera Bread's Soups
  • Best Decorated Table - Aladdin's Restaurant
  • Best Broth - Kevin O'Brian's Pub's Twice-Baked Potato Soup
  • Most Creatively Named - United Way's 'Bob's Dragon Breath Chili' (provided by Bob Kulinski)

Early tabulations show the 'Soup-er Bowl' raised nearly $1,000 for United Way, an impressive total considering the sub-zero temperatures that enveloped the City.  Thanks to all the restaurateurs, soup-eaters, and volunteers who braved the frigid weather to help make 'Soup-er Bowl' a huge success.

Campaign News
United Parcel Service is Top in USA
United Way of America announced that United Parcel Service, together with its employees and retirees, for the eighth consecutive year, is the nation's top donor to United Way, with more than $60.8 million donated during the 2007 campaign.

Locally, the 285 employees at the Akron UPS facility have pledged approximately $70,000 to United Way of Summit County. They also contribute a great deal of time to a variety of volunteer activities, including Day of Caring. And UPS Area Sales Manager Mark Cherryholmes serves on our Board of Directors. Thanks to all our friends with UPS who give so generously to our community!

GoJo Campaign Reaches Record High
GoJo set out to increase giving in their annual campaign and ended with great success.  Contributing to their victory was a "Frequently Asked Question and Answer" fact sheet for donors to review and repeated motivational reminders to get involved in something good.  Enthusiastic donor giving raised a total of $74,600 -- a $21,500 increase over last year!  Thank you to all the employees at GoJo for your generous giving and for being a strong supporter of our community.

Rubber City Arches Giving Increases
Rubber City Arches had an overall campaign increase of $12,000 over last year!  President John Blickle's leadership message motivated employee giving at all levels within the organization. This year Rubber City Arches raised a total of $32,721!  Thanks to the employees and managers at all McDonald's store locations for making a difference in our community.

Community Matters to Library Employees
Thank you to all the employees at the Akron-Summit County Public Library for their consistent and continued support. With participation from county-wide library branches, enthusiastic and caring employees raised a total of $10,665 towards critical issues facing our community. Great job and thank you everyone for your commitment towards what matters!

Volunteers Needed and Appointments Available for
Tax Program

Each year the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Coalition of Akron works to files taxes, free of charge, for low and moderate income individuals and families.  Their goal is to ensure that families and individuals are aware of the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit that they may be eligible to receive. And also that filers receive these dollars free of tax filing charges and become aware of services that can help make them financially stronger.  The EITC program can assist working families with receiving up to $4,700 in funds if eligible.

The EITC Program is in need of volunteers to be Tax Preparers, Greeters, Intake Assessors, Office Assistants, Quality Reviewers and Site Coordinators for the upcoming tax season.  Training will be provided for all volunteer positions.  If you are interested in volunteering contact Pam at the United Way Volunteer Center at 330.643.5512 or email pbeals@uwsummit.org.

Appointments are also now being taken for those individuals and families that need help filing their taxes.  Call 1-866-861-6401 to make your appointment.
