Don't Miss Main Street Gourmet's Muffin Day
On Tuesday, July 17, 2007, Main Street Gourmet will be celebrating a milestone, their 20th anniversary, and are planning a Muffin Day event to thank the City of Akron and the local community for their part in its success. Proceeds from Muffin Day will benefit United Way of Summit County.

This first ever Muffin Day will be held at Lock 3 in downtown Akron from 11 AM to 2 PM. Event sponsors include 98.1 FM WKDD, The Akron Beacon Journal, Downtown Akron Partnership, Greater Akron Chamber, The University of Akron, and the City of Akron.

Muffin Day will feature events including a muffin eating contest, scavenger hunt, most creative muffin competition, picture booth, closest to the "pan" and slap shot competitions using muffins and more. Main Street Gourmet will also unveil a plaque commemorating its link to the City of Akron that will be kept at Lock 3.

As part of the Muffin Day festivities, United Way of Summit County has several staff people participating in the fun and games. Charlene Corlett, Brenda Farrell, Margaret Grimm and Sunny O’Connell participated in the Photo Scavenger Hunt, searching around Akron using clues to find and photograph each entry. Several others will participate in the Muffin Eating Contest, as well as volunteer during the event.

First Campaign of 2007 Kicks Off at
Bridgestone Firestone
The first campaign of the year is in full swing at Bridgestone Firestone.  Employees were encouraged to make their pledge early in the campaign to keep momentum and excitement at the highest level.

Employees making early pledges were able to choose from one of three items containing the Company's logo.  Choices were camp chair, desk clock or cooler.

The campaign ends on July 20th and additional prizes including tires, shirts, hats, coolers, etc. will be awarded to all donors.  As an extra added incentive Bridgestone Firestone will be awarding prizes donated from Myers Industries' product line.  In return a set of tires will be donated as a prize for Myers employees when they run their campaign later in the year.

Women’s Leadership Giving Society Holds Annual 'Power of the Purse' Luncheon
The United Way of Summit County Women's Leadership Giving Society held their annual 'Power of the Purse' luncheon at the The University of Akron, Martin Center on Wednesday July 11th. The keynote speaker was Barbara D. Mathews, retired Senior Vice President of FirstMerit Bank.  Barbara spoke on the 'power of the purse' and experiences from her youth that were improved by the Akron Urban League, a United Way affiliated agency.

The Women's Society new community initiative Born Learning was presented as part of the agenda. Sandy Auburn of This City Reads! and Chris Yuhasz of Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority related the Born Learning partnerships the Women's Society has formed with their organizations.

The luncheon also featured the presentation of the fourth annual "Woman Philanthropist of the Year" award to Elizabeth Bartz, for her outstanding service to our community.  Elizabeth is the President/CEO of State and Federal Communications, Inc. and has demonstrated outstanding support for charitable organizations in our community both personally and through her company.

The goal of the Women's Leadership Giving Society is to encourage, educate and energize women in the ways of philanthropy to make a difference in our community.
