Andre Thornton to Speak at Knight Breakfast
Andre ThorntonJoin us for United Way of Summit County's annual
Knight Breakfast featuring Cleveland Indians all-time legend Andre Thornton on Thursday, August 9, 2007
7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at the Crowne Plaza Quaker Square Hotel Ballroom, 135 S. Broadway St. in Akron.

Andre Thornton is a baseball hero in the truest sense of the word. During his 14-year career, he gained as many fans for his off-field class and dignity as he did for his prowess as an all-around hitter.

While 'Thunder' Thornton's name appears near the top of many Indians' career hitting categories -- including at-bats, home runs, and runs batted in -- he is more beloved for the way he overcame personal tragedy and continued to live his faith. His inspirational story will touch sports fans and non-sports fans alike.

He currently serves as President and CEO of ASW Global, an international supply chain management company headquartered here in Summit County.

Seats are just $25 per person, $220 for a table of 9 and includes a breakfast buffet.  Please RSVP online by August 3rd, 2007 or call Barb at 330.643.5533 or email bstewart@uwsummit.org for more information.

United Disability Services Sponsors Super Kids Classic
The National Super Kids Classic soap box derby race for kids with disabilities was held last Friday at Akron's famed Derby Downs.  This marks the first time the Super Kids event was held the same weekend as the All-American race.  United Disability Services, a leader in providing services for individuals with disabilities in Summit and Portage Counties and United Way affiliated agency, served as the major sponsor for the Super Kids Classic, providing both financial and in-kind support.

"UDS is a natural fit with our mission and the children and their families that we are involved with," said Michael T. Callahan, president of the National Super Kids Classic Board of Directors.  "We are thrilled to have UDS on board as our first-ever major sponsor and look forward to a long and successful relationship."

While there are similarities to the traditional All-American Soap Box Derby, the Super Kids Classic offers a unique opportunity for children with disabilities to have their own soap box derby experience.  Each car is equipped with two steering wheels and has been specially designed to accommodate both a child with special needs and a veteran soap box derby driver who serves as a co-pilot.

The Super Kids Classic is a double-elimination event, and as a special thrill for the contestants -- after racing in a variety of heats on Friday, the six finalists from these heats got to race again on Saturday, July 21, during the All-American Soap Box Derby.

According to UDS Executive Director Gary Knuth, "We are excited to have such a unique opportunity to be able to support children with disabilities and their families while playing a major role in a national event being held right here in our own hometown.  This is a great, one-of-a-kind experience that brings families and children of all abilities together and UDS is proud to be a part of it."
