LIVE UNITED on Day of Action this Friday!
Look for more than 1,200 people living united by volunteering at non-profit health and human service agencies throughout Summit County on 'Day of Action' this Friday. United Way of Summit County is hosting this event formerly known as 'Day of Caring'.  The volunteers, from 57 local companies, will take the day off from work to help with about 105 projects.

A Kickoff Rally/Celebration will be hosted by the Jerry Shaw Jewish Community Center at 8:00 a.m. that morning.  All participating volunteers are invited to attend for a brief welcome and a continental breakfast.

So look for the volunteers in their LIVE UNITED shirts this Friday and thank them for making a difference in our community!  Thanks also to the 2008 sponsor of this event, FirstEnergy Foundation.

Goodyear Employees (pictured above) held their Day of Action on Thursday and Friday of last week at YMCA Camp Y-Noah to fix-up the facilities ahead of the summer campers.

United Way Seeking Musical Acts for Docs Who Rock
United Way of Summit County's Docs Who RockTM annual physician talent show will be held for the third consecutive year at The University of Akron's E.J. Thomas Hall. Docs Who Rock V, scheduled for Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 7 p.m., is an opportunity for local doctors to showcase their musical talents.

Docs Who Rock was held at the Main Library's 430-seat auditorium in 2004 and the 800-plus-seat theatre at North High School in 2005. Beginning in 2006, The University of Akron agreed to host the event at the beautiful E.J. Thomas Hall, and in the past two years, attendance has grown from 1,600 to nearly 2,000 people in 2007.

As in the past, musical acts must have at least one member who is a doctor (M.D. or D.O.) and who lives or practices in Summit County. Solo acts are also welcome, and all musical styles are encouraged to apply.

Meet the Team

Charlene Corlett

Vice President Major Gifts

Charlene Corlett joined United Way of Summit County in the fall of 2003 and has been a valuable asset ever since.

Charlene's efforts at United Way focus on the Tocqueville Society. It's a program that deals with donors who contribute $10,000 or more annually. Charlene oversees this entire project. She works closely with the campaign staff to recruit new donors, which is very much a team effort.

Charlene commends the members of the Tocqueville Society for their tremendous generosity. "There are 131 donors that give at least $10,000 annually and many of them give far more," Charlene says. Working on this project has been a rewarding experience for her.

"Charlene is the best Major Gifts Officer I have ever worked with," says President, United Way of Summit County, Bob Kulinski. "The increase in our Tocqueville membership from 67 to 131 during the time she has served our organization is a tribute to her hard work, diligence, attention to detail, and willingness to "make the ask." Our volunteers and major gift donors have the highest expectations of staff and the organizations that they support at significant levels, and Charlene has never failed to exceed these expectations with the highest degree of professionalism and focus on our donors and their best interests. We are blessed to have Charlene on our team."

Charlene lives in Canton with her husband Bob Corlett who is retired. In addition to her work at United Way, she also donates her time and energy to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. She is vice chair of the annual enshrinement dinner which attracts more than 5,000 participants each year. Meeting the enshrined athletes is always an exciting experience for her.

Jumpstart Your Annual Campaign!  Be a Pacesetter
As a Pacesetter for the 2008 Annual Campaign you set the pace for everyone else!  Running your campaign in the summer has great advantages, including energizing your employees half-way through the year, taking advantage of the warm weather for special events and breathing new life into your traditional fall campaign.

Pacesetters receive unique recognition opportunities through media and our website and will be invited to our campaign kick-off event as a special thank you.  Pacesetter campaigns should be completed by September 5, 2008.  Your United Way representative will review your campaign history and determine a realistic goal for your 2008 campaign.  The goal is based on increasing participation by 5 percent or increasing campaign growth by 10 percent.

If your company would like to run a Pacesetter Campaign, contact Katie Rennard, Vice President Resource Development at 330.643.5517 or email krennard@uwsummit.org

Shaw JCC to Host International Athletic Competition -- Volunteers Needed
From August 10-15, 2008, the Shaw Jewish Community Center of Akron will host the JCC Maccabi Games, an annual international Olympic-style, athletic, cultural, community service and social event that has united Jewish teens since 1982. The JCC Maccabi Games in Akron will include more than 400 Jewish athletes ages 13-16 from the United States, Israel and Venezuela and will draw hundreds of families and spectators to the city. Akron is the smallest city ever to be invited to host the JCC Maccabi Games, and its selection as a host location reflects both on the spirit of its Jewish community and the quality of its civic life.

Thousands of Volunteers are needed to ensure the success of the Games -- individuals must be at least 16 to volunteer. Want to do something great for yourself, the community, and Jewish teens from around the world? Get in the Games. For additional information, including how to register as a volunteer, just follow the blimp at www.shawjcc.org,  contact Dave Rubens, Shaw Jewish Community Center of Akron at dave_rubens@shawjcc.org,  330.835.0036 or Pam Beals with the United Way Volunteer Center at pbeals@uwsummit.org,  330.643.5512.
