Born Learning Featured at Kiwanis Club Meeting
Beth Stucky, Chair of United Way's Women's Leadership Giving Society and Beth Houseman, Senior Director Leadership Giving, were guest speakers at the Kiwanis Club of Akron's January 31st meeting. The topic was Born Learning, United Way of Summit County's Early Childhood Initiative. United Way's local Born Learning programs described for the group include playgroups established in conjunction with Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority (AMHA) based on the Born Learning program within select AMHA facilities, distributing the Born Learning DVD "Begin With Love" to clinics, hospitals and doctor's offices, food pantries and other facilities that serve the families of young children, and distribution of Born Learning materials to United Way funded programs that have early education components. The University of Akron Continues Outstanding Community Support
The University of Akron
celebrates another great year raising over $138,000 for United Way!  A special thank you to Luis M. Proenza, President of the University; John LaGuardia, VP of Public Affairs and Development; Mack Rhoades, Director of Athletics; and David Osterland, Associate VP for Community Relations for their efforts toward the campaign and to join us on community events.  Our sponsorship agreement with the Athletics Department helps United Way maintain a high profile with their sports teams.  The University of Akron is also very generous in the agreement that makes it possible for us to hold the Docs Who Rock show at the beautiful E.J. Thomas Hall.  This entertaining event has been growing in popularity and is very beneficial to United Way and to the community.  Please join us again for the fun festivities as Docs Who Rock will perform for the 5th consecutive year on October 25, 2008.  Thank you to everyone at the University of Akron as we sincerely appreciate all your giving support that assists in making our community a great place to live, work and raise a family.

Bar Association Raises the Bar Again!
Thanks to the Akron Bar Association and its membership for another year of outstanding support of the United Way campaign. Measures of number of donors, leadership giving (gifts of $1000 or more), average gift and overall giving were again up in 2007 over the previous year, and the Bar Association will again be recognized as an organization with one of the  largest number of leadership donors of all organizations in Summit County.

In 2007 the Akron Bar Association Board expressed support of United Way for the second year with 100% of its membership contributing to the United Way campaign. Judge Linda Tucci Teodosio, as president elect, represented the Bar Association on the United Way Campaign Cabinet for 2007 and president J. Dean Carro authored letters to Bar members encouraging contributions to United Way particularly at the leadership level. Finally, the Akron Bar Association again offered the Wendell L. Willkie Award program that was established in 2006 to encourage friendly competition between firms through United Way campaigns.

Thank you to all members of the Akron Bar Association that understand the important impact that United Way has on our community. United Way of Summit County and its partner agencies are deeply grateful to the Akron Bar Association and its membership for its long and distinguished support of United Way.

Stark & Knoll Wins the Wendell L. Willkie Award for the Second Year
The Akron Bar Association partnered with United Way of Summit County to again offer the Wendell L. Willkie Award Law Challenge, a friendly competition designed to demonstrate to Summit County the crucial leadership role lawyers play in helping our community to be a better place to live and do business. The challenge was issued to all Akron Bar Association law firms to incorporate into their 2007 United Way Campaigns, and is one of several initiatives the Bar Association undertook in 2007 to encourage greater financial commitment by the law community to United Way.

Congratulations and the award go to Stark & Knoll for the second consecutive year for achieving the highest percentage increase in per capita contributions to United Way at 61.5%! This increase was measured by the total dollar amount of individual donations by firm employees excluding corporate gifts / total number of firm employees with at least 50% of all firm employees participating during the 2006 Campaign. Stark & Knoll's success will be commemorated on a large engraved plaque prominently displayed at the Bar Association new offices. The firm will also receive a smaller plaque to display in their own offices and will be specially recognized at events and in publications of the Bar Association and United Way of Summit County. Other Law firms that logged increases in per capital giving to the 2007 campaign include Hahn Loeser & Parks, LLP at 51.8%, Roetzel & Andress at 40.8%, Brouse McDowell at 40% and Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLP at 12.6%.

If your firm did not run a United Way Campaign in 2007 now is the time to begin planning one for 2008! Contact Beth Houseman at 330.643.5519 or bhouseman@uwsummit.org.

Community Aids Network Studies Grief/Loss Issues

On February 27th The Community Aids Network had a Brown Bag Seminar, regarding grief and loss issues. Rochelle Sheppard, a licensed counselor currently working for Visiting Nurse Services, was the administrator. Mrs. Sheppard was able to enlighten the group on various issues regarding grief and steps to take for improvement. United Way would like to thank The Community Aids Network for allowing the seminar to take place and to improve their staff understanding of the issue.

AkronReads Offers H. Peter Burg Book Awards to Graduating Seniors
AkronReads, an OhioReads initiative, is a community tutoring partnership between the Akron Public Schools and the AkronReads Business Partners -- a coalition of local businesses, government agencies, and nonprofit and civic organizations.  The United Way of Summit County is a member of the AkronReads Business Partners. Since the program began during the 1999-2000 school year, thousands of employees from the AkronReads Business Partners organizations have volunteered their time to help ensure that Akron’s youngest students are reading at their grade level.

The AkronReads Book Awards honor the late H. Peter Burg, former Chairman and CEO of FirstEnergy, and avid United Way volunteer and supporter.  As a member of Ohio Gov. Bob Taft’s OhioReads Business Council, Pete led the effort to establish AkronReads in partnership with the Akron Public Schools and area businesses. Graduating seniors are encouraged to apply for a book award in the spirit for which AkronReads was created. Seven (7) awards will be granted, one for each Akron Public High School.  For more information and an application visit the AkronReads website.

Tax Program

Each year the United Way of Summit County participates in the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Coalition of Akron that works to file taxes, free of charge, for low and moderate income individuals and families.  Their goal is to ensure that families and individuals are aware of the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit that they may be eligible to receive. And also that filers receive these dollars free of tax filing charges and become aware of services that can help make them financially stronger.  The EITC program can assist working families with receiving up to $4,700 in funds if eligible.  Appointments are being taken for those individuals and families that need help filing their taxes.  Call 1.866.861.6401 to make your appointment.
