Annual Meeting Recognizes Outstanding
Volunteers/Campaigns |

The United Way of Summit
County held its
91st Annual Meeting on Thursday, April 30th at the Hilton Akron-Fairlawn.
One of the
highlights of the meeting was the presentation of the
Distinguished Service Award to
Timothy R. Fitzwater. Tim Fitzwater has been an active,
dedicated leader in Northeast Ohio for more than 30 years. He served as the Volunteer Chairman of the 2005
United Way/Red Cross Fundraising Campaign. |

The Young Philanthropist of the Year was presented to Danielle
J. Kimmell, of Bober Markey Fedorovich. Danielle is a longtime
contributor to United Way and is actively involved with many
different endeavors, including serving as Vice President of
the Board of Directors for Project GRAD Akron, volunteering
with Habitat for Humanity and participating in Accounting
for Kids Day through the Ohio Society of CPA’s. |

The Community Builder Award was presented
to Dale A. Ruther.
Dale, a partner with the accounting firm Bober Markey
Fedorovich, has been an active volunteer with United Way of
Summit County since 1993. He has served as chair of the
Audit Review Committee, a member of the Community Impact
Cabinet, a member of the agency review teams, and is a
long-time leadership giver. |

The 2009 Spirit
of Caring Award was awarded to Rubber City Radio Group.
Through its local radio stations – WAKR, 1590-AM; WONE, 97.5 FM; and WQMX,
94.9 FM – Rubber City Radio Group has helped United Way of
Summit County share its message with the community. They
have generously donated advertising time, as well as
conducting on-air interviews with United Way staff members,
and co-sponsored several events including Chickenfest and
Docs Who Rock. |

Additionally,
The United Way of Summit County installed 17 new members to its
Board of Directors, elected officers, presented awards to
outstanding campaigns, and thanked 2008 Campaign Chair,

service during the 2008 Campaign. |

United Way Celebrates Volunteerism |
|
The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center, in conjunction
with National Volunteer Week, celebrated the spirit of volunteerism
through its 8th annual Volunteer Celebration "Volunteers...Priceless!,"
on Thursday, April 23rd. |

Over 350 people attended the event celebrating volunteerism in our
community. As part of the Volunteer Celebration, four volunteer
stories of those who displayed extraordinary volunteer services
within their organization were represented in a profile video.
Michael Burgoyne, Alisha Greenawalt and Stephanie Klein, students
from Professor Gabriel Giralt's class at the University of Akron's
School of Communication, created the video stories as a class
project.

Local AFL/CIO, United Way Will Honor
Community Volunteers at Dinner |

Tri-County Regional Labor Council AFL-CIO and United Way of Summit
County will serve as co-hosts for the annual Community Service
Awards Dinner on Thursday, May 21, beginning at 6:00 pm at the
Hilton Akron/Fairlawn, 3180 W. Market Street. United Way of Summit
County and Organized Labor have a long history of working together
to make our community a better place to live, work and raise a
family. Tickets are just $40 and available by calling Linda
Lancaster at (330) 253-2111.
This year’s honorees are Robert J. Otterman, who will receive the
Peter Bommarito Award, and Sally Akers, who will be presented the
Leo E. Dugan Award. |

Sally Akers |
In January 1970, Bob Otterman was sworn into office as an
Akron City Councilman, and when he left Council in 2000, he
was the longest serving councilman in Akron history. Bob
served as a Marine in Korea where he earned a Purple Heart
and a medal for exemplary leadership.
In 2000, he left his position as councilman when he was elected
State Representative of the 45th House District. Bob served as a
representative until 2008, and now spends his free time with his
five grandchildren.
Bob has many different organizations and groups he is affiliated
with, including St. Matthew |
| Catholic Church,
Firestone Prime Timers, Ellet Amateur Athletic Association,
Ellet Keen Agers, and a number of seniors’ groups. Bob is
the past president of the “all American Soap Box Derby,” the
University of Akron Varsity “A,” and the Akron Counselor’s
Association.
The winner of the Leo E. Dugan Community Service Award for 2009 is
Sally Akers. While raising two beautiful children, and enjoying her
four grandchildren, Sally has always aspired to make a difference in
her community, and make Northeast Ohio a better place for us all.
In 1968, Sally was hired by AFSCME Council 11 to assist Harold
Watson in the organization of city and county employees and
non-profit hospitals. Sally has been a major player for decades within the AFSCME, and remains a crucial member of the organization
today. Thanks to Sally’s devoted service, the AFSCME was successful
in organizing Akron City, Barberton Citizens, Robinson Memorial
Hospitals, and more than 30 governmental agencies. When Sally
started at the AFSCME, there were 600 members; today, there are more
than 5,000, and are one of the largest unions in the country within
the AFL-CIO. Currently, Sally is Vice-President of AFSCME Akron Sub
Chapter Retirees Local 116, an executive board member of the Ohio
AFSCME Retirees, the recording secretary of the United Retirees of
America, a delegate to the AFSCME Ohio Council 8 Akron Regional
Leadership Committee, and a Delegate to the Tri-County Regional
Labor Council, AFL-CIO.
Sally is an Elder at the Allenside United Presbyterian Church, where
she volunteers for church activities, and works part time for the
Summit County Environmental Services Department. She is a dues paying
member of Local 1229, AFSCME, and AFL-CIO.

Letter Carriers' Annual Food Drive
Set for May 9 |

The National Association
of Letter Carriers (NALC) announced that their 17th
Annual National Food Drive to "Stamp Out Hunger", the
largest one-day food drive in the nation, will take place
on Saturday, May 9. On that day, letter carriers will
collect non-perishable donations from homes as they deliver
mail along their postal routes.
Donations will
be collected by more than 1,400 local branches of the
300,000-member postal union and delivered to food banks,
pantries and shelters that serve the communities where they
are |
| collected.
Assisting in the effort are other postal employees, members
of other unions and thousands of civic volunteers.
Over 125 million postcards, sponsored by the Campbell Soup
Company and the U.S. Postal Service's Priority Mail, will be
mailed to postal customers as a reminder. Other co-sponsors
of the drive with the letter carriers' union are Feeding
America, the nation's largest food bank network; the
United Way of America and its local United Ways; and the AFL-CIO. |

Ernst & Young Employees Complete Done in
a Day Project for Camp Invention |

On April 17
employees of Ernst & Young, one of the world’s
leading professional services organizations volunteered
their time for United Way’s Done In A Day. Local
Ernst & Young volunteers gathered at Invent Now Kids,
a non-profit organization whose |
| Camp Invention
program instills creative problem-solving and
critical-thinking skills that encourage children’s future
success. Volunteers helped to clean, prepare, and pack
supplies for upcoming Camp Invention programs which are held
across the United States. Special thanks go out to Annie
Blanchard for her help coordinating the project and to all
the volunteers for helping to make summer camp a reality for
hundreds of young people across the country!
