United Way Hosts 'Read-to-Me' Day
For the fourteenth consecutive year, United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center coordinated "Read-to-Me" Day in cooperation with its Corporate Volunteer Council, other local businesses and organizations, and the Akron Public Schools.

On Wednesday, October 24th, 320 Akron area classrooms took on a different atmosphere, as 169 volunteers from 30 local businesses and organizations came together to promote literacy. Childhood favorites were read to children in kindergarten through 3rd grade. In addition to reading, and in some cases donating a book, volunteers also answered students' questions about their occupations.

Participating companies and organizations were: A. Schulman; Advanced Elastomer Systems; Akron General Medical Center; Allstate Insurance; Akron Public Schools; BCG Company; Bober, Markey, Fedorovich & Company; Bridgestone/Firestone; Charter One Bank; Akron Children's Hospital; First Merit Bank; Goodrich Corporation De-Icing & Specialty Systems; Goodrich Power Systems; GPD & Associates; Harwick Standard; Kaiser Permanente, Chapel Hill; Kaiser Permanente, Fairlawn; Klais & Company; Lockheed Martin; Meaden & Moore; Ohio Edison Company; OMNOVA Solutions; PPG Industries; Sterling Jewelers; Summa Health Systems; The Akron Beacon Journal; The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company; United Way of Summit County; UPS; and United Way of Summit County's Women's Leadership Giving Society.

Bob Kulinski, President of United Way of Summit County, said, "By spearheading Read-to-Me Day, we show these students and the community our strong support for literacy. We're grateful to these employers that allow their employees to participate, and I can speak from personal experience how much the children enjoy Read-to-Me Day and how gratifying it is to us readers."

Women's Society Members Read at Sam Salem School
Members of the Women's Leadership Giving Society participated in Read-To-Me Day at Sam Salem Elementary School on Wednesday, October 24th. Nine classes ranging from kindergarten to 3rd grade, were read to for one-half hour by Women's Society members through this program that works to increase literacy by motivating students to develop good reading habits at a young age. Books were purchased by Women's Society readers and then donated to the classrooms and the school library.

The Women's Leadership Giving Society was created by United Way of Summit County to inspire, educate and engage women in philanthropy, community service, advocacy and mentoring in order to positively impact the lives of people and our community. Female donors, giving at the leadership level of $1000 and above (alone or combined with their spouse), are automatically welcome members of The Women's Leadership Giving Society.  The Women's Initiative holds regular monthly meetings on the 1st Tuesday of most months at 8:30 a.m., United Way of Summit County Offices.  Please contact Beth Houseman, Senior Director, Leadership Giving, at 330.643.5519 or bhouseman@uwsummit.org for more information.

Campaign News

Sterling Jewelers Shines
For the employees at Sterling Jewelers of Fairlawn, a goal is not an ultimate objective, it is merely a suggestion. They proved that during the 2007 United Way campaign when they refused to settle for achieving the company's goal of a $5,000 overall increase and instead blew past it to raise more than $20,000 over last year's campaign!!

Special events such as the company favorite "Denim Days" helped push them over the top, but ultimately it is the generosity of Sterling's employees in supporting our community that makes them so successful. Many thanks go out to Sterling Jewelers for supporting United Way and our efforts to improve lives in Summit County.

MACtac Has 'Short and Very Sweet' Campaign
A big thank you goes to MACtac North America for having a $6,400 increase over last year.
They had a 'Short and Sweet' campaign theme, holding it over a shorter period of time and tying in a 'sweet' theme with a bake sale as their special event and raffling 'pies in the faces' for the President and also for the Vice President of Sales.  United Way would like to thank this year's campaign coordinator, Holly Murphy (pictured with a pie in the face) for her leadership in creating these fun events and coordinating lunch for all shifts to make this the best campaign ever.  Holly stated "This year's campaign was fantastic!  Our employees really enjoyed it and we hope to continue growing our contributions into next year's campaign!"  Thank you MACtac for making Summit County a better place to live!

Myers Industries Holds Great Campaign!
It was another great year for the Myers Industries United Way fundraiser kick-off.  As always, the Myers employees opened their wallets and their hearts to help make our community a better place -- and they had a lot of fun in the process.

The week began with ticket sales for multiple raffle drawings, with prizes ranging from Browns vs. Steelers football tickets to a set of tires, a new TV to everyone's favorite -- preferred parking in the employee lot!  And the competitive spirit didn’t stop there, as both corn hole and euchre tournaments were held throughout the week.  All proceeds from the events benefited the United Way of Summit County.

This year's "All-American" themed luncheon treated employees to a bountiful meal of fried chicken, potato salad, and baked beans.  And what's more American than apple pie?  Well, in this case it was pumpkin pie, in the form of a hilarious pie-eating contest!

The true highlight of the day came with a visit from everyone's favorite big-league mascot, Slider.  Slider was on-hand to fire-up Myers' support of the United Way's charitable causes, in addition to helping the crowd cheer on the Cleveland Indians as they headed into the playoffs.

Through all of the laughter, the reason for this important event -- helping those in need -- was not lost on anyone.  As event coordinator Tracey Rardin said, "At Myers, we stress that there is no minimum gift, but we encourage everyone to give as much as they can.  From the raffle sales to the pledge cards, every gift counts.  That's what matters to us."

PPG Industries Has Pancake Campaign Kickoff
PPG Industries held their annual United Way campaign kickoff on Friday, October 19th. This year PPG held the event in their training facility where they provided a delicious pancake, sausage, and orange juice breakfast. The festivities included drawings for wonderful door prizes and phenomenal baskets for individuals who donated to the United Way. United Way would like to thank PPG Industries for conducting such an incredible event, and consistently supporting our community.

ASC Industries Kicks Off Hot Campaign with Chili
On Monday October 22nd, ASC Industries held their annual United Way Chili Kickoff. Thirteen first-shift employees and six second-shift employees competed for the coveted United Way Chili Kickoff Champion apron. In the end two winners were crowned from each shift, along with winners of the bake goods contest. However, the real winners are the residents of Summit County, as proceeds of the event will go along with ASC Industries contribution to the United Way.  United Way would like to thank ASC Industries for their commitment to strengthening our community.

Lockheed Martin Kicks off Campaign
Lockheed Martin
kicked off its annual United Way Campaign on Monday, October 29th.  Donna Saucier and Colleen Arthur are leading the charge as co-chairs for Lockheed Martin's campaign.  Guest speakers Paul Evans and Ron Ferre highlighted the event with personal stories about how the United Way has helped them.  Lockheed Martin is proud to continue its support to the United Way of Summit County, our community partner. Last year, Lockheed Martin Akron employees gave more than $228,000 to the United Way of Summit County. The collective goal this year is $250,000 in contributions from LM Akron employees and at least 90% participation from the site.  Thanks Lockheed Martin for your commitment to our community!

Allstate Employees give back to Stewart's Caring Place
On Friday, October 19, Allstate employees Wendy Dunivan, Michelle Meyers, Donna Woods, Dee Dee Wood, Brenda Matthews, Kathy Ceffarati, Debbie Gray, Joe Santangelo and Kim Delsavio went to Stewart's Caring Place to help prepare for their Third Annual Holiday Boutique.  The volunteer project was to help them clean out rooms and set up tables and chairs.  They also helped by stuffing envelopes for the thank you letters to the vendors and people who donated items for the boutique along with helping vendors unload their cars.  "I'm a cancer survivor so coming today had a special purpose for me" indicated Michelle Myers.  Dee Dee Wood said "It is great to know that there is such a wonderful place in the Akron area for people who are impacted by cancer to get support."  Evelyn DiBello, Development Director at Stewart's Caring Place, said the Annual Holiday Boutique was a great success and that they had over 350 people in attendance, "Thank you to all who helped."

Attorneys Unite For United Way
On September 27, 2007, for the second consecutive year, the Board of Trustees of the Akron Bar Association unanimously adopted a resolution supporting United Way and pledging 100% Board participation in the 2007 campaign. The Akron Bar Association has a long and distinguished history of its members supporting United Way. With 103 members contributing at the Leadership donor level of $1,000 or more in 2006, the Akron Bar Association ranked as the organization with the third largest number of givers at this level.

In addition to passage of the resolution, the Bar Association is supporting a number of additional initiatives designed to encourage its membership to participate in the 2007 United Way campaign. These efforts will include personal requests to individual lawyers to increase their gifts or to begin giving, and articles in Bar Association publications. The Akron Bar Association is also sponsoring the second annual Wendell L. Willkie Law Challenge, an incentive program developed to encourage increased contributions through existing firm campaigns and to encourage the establishment of new campaigns. The award will go to the firm with the highest percentage increase in per capita contribution. These criteria were established so that firms of all sizes could compete and have an equal chance of winning. The 2006 Wendell L. Willkie Award recipient was Stark & Knoll.

The Akron Bar Association was founded in 1875 and currently has an active membership of over 1,440 lawyers. Its mission, through education, advocacy and community service, empowers its members to reflect the highest professional standards, enabling them to earn the community's utmost respect so our legal system will be recognized as fair, accessible and just.

IRAs and Charitable Giving
If you are over age 70 ˝ years -- or if you help older loved ones with their finances -- you should know about a new tax law that lets you make a gift to United Way by transferring funds directly from your IRA without claiming any increased income or paying any additional tax.

Your tax-free gift can be any amount up to $100,000 for tax year 2007.  If you are married and each spouse has an IRA, both can use their IRA assets to make charitable gifts.  But the law only applies to gifts made before December 31, 2007, and no one knows if the law will be extended for 2008.  Here are several reasons to consider this option.

Simple and Easy:  Just contact your IRA office and request that your gift be transferred directly from your account to United Way.  We receive a much-needed gift and you avoid any additional tax because the amount taken from your IRA is not reported as taxable income

Now Is The Time:  The law is set to expire the end of 2007 so now is the time to contact your IRA office to get the ball rolling.  You want to give yourself sufficient "turn-around time" so your funds can be requested, processed and post marked no later than December 31, 2007.

Special Opportunity: Have you ever considered endowing your annual gift so your caring power can continue forever? By using IRA assets you might be able to make a special gift that would be beyond your means using your regular income.

As always, we encourage you to consult with your professional advisors in advance if you are considering a gift under the new law.   For additional information visit our website at www.uwsummit.org  and click on “Planned Giving.”  For a confidential discussion contact Charlene Corlett at 330.643.5537 or ccorlett@uwsummit.org
