FirstEnergy Corp's Team A with Jason Wallace and Jordan Cuddy (pictured above left) won 1st place, followed by Akron General Lifestyles Team A with Justin Berthiaume and Lindsey Vittorio placing 2nd, and FirstEnergy Team C with Brian Workman and Nikki Farrell in 3rd place.  Congratulations to the winning teams and thanks to all the companies and organizations that participated; Akron Children's Hospital, Akron General Lifestyles, Americhem, Inc., Cohen & Company, FirstEnergy, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Kelley Realty, Meaden & Moore, Mobile Meals, National City Bank, Rockynol, Rubber City Radio Group, Inc., Summa Health System and the Summit County Executive's Office.

Special thanks to our friends at CYO Athletics who are invaluable in making this event run so smoothly. Not only do they manage the competitive portion of the day, they brought a group of East High School volunteers to help with rebounding. Our thanks to Mary Ann King, Vic Rosato, and Mary Kase for all their hard work and attention to detail.

Docs Who Rock IV Coming October 13
Since its inception in 2004, United Way of Summit County's 'Docs Who RockTM,' a physician talent show, has quickly grown into one of the region's 'must see' productions. Docs Who Rock IV, sponsored by The University of Akron, will be held at E.J. Thomas Hall on Saturday, October 13, beginning at 7:00 pm.

Tickets for the show are available now at the E.J. Thomas box office or at ticketmaster.com for $12 and $25. For more information, visit www.docswhorock.com.

The event is an opportunity for local doctors to showcase their musical talents. After holding the 2004 event in the 430-seat auditorium at the new Main Library and the 2005 show at the 800+ seat theatre at North High School, the committee of United Way volunteers working on Docs Who Rock began looking for larger venues in which to hold the event. In 2006, the University of Akron stepped up as sponsor of Docs Who Rock, making it possible to use beautiful E.J. Thomas Hall.

Dr. Terry Gordon will open the show with another musical tribute. Over the years, Dr. Gordon has imitated a variety of pop culture icons, including Rod Stewart, Austin Powers, Mick Jagger and Tina Turner. His character (or perhaps characters) for the 2007 show is a closely guarded secret. "All I can tell you is, my mother made me promise I wouldn't perform in drag again this year," Dr. Gordon said.

Ten acts will be competing in the show to be named champion of Docs Who Rock. Each band features at least one Doctor (M.D. or D.O.) who lives or practices in Summit County. The acts are: defending champions Accent featuring Dr. Fred Slezak; Big Adventure with Dr. Andrew McIntosh; V-Tach featuring Dr. Tom Javorsky and Dr. Joe Pietrolungo; Collideascope featuring Dr. Rob Hermanowski; The House Popes featuring Dr. Eric Jagar; Sound Advice featuring Dr. Tim Newman; The Docs of Dixieland featuring Dr. Paul LeCat and Dr. Debbie Plate; and Ultrasound featuring Dr. Akida Green, Dr. George Kefalas, Dr. Costas Kefalas, Dr. Michael Wells, Dr. Matt Taylor, Dr. Nick Papas, and Dr. Edward Esber; a duet featuring Dr. Todd Beyer and Dr. Jeff Bachtel and a piano solo by Dr. Georges Markarian.

United Way of Summit County President Bob Kulinski said, "The buzz that this event creates each fall is phenomenal, and the reason is the combination of a great cause combined with a great show. The performances of Dr. Terry Gordon, the other physicians and all the talented musicians who donate their time and talent are outstanding. Everyone who sees this show feels that they got their money's worth."

Chickenfest Is Big Success
United Way of Summit County held the return of 'Chickenfest!TM' to Barberton's Lake Anna Park, Friday and Saturday September 7th and 8th.  The crowd enjoyed live music, games such as Frozen Chicken Bowling and Rubber Chicken Toss, inflatables for the kids and plenty of chicken provided by
DeVore's Hopocan Gardens, Belgrade Garden, Milich's Village Inn, and Hodge's Cafe.  Check out the Photos Now Online

Babcock & Wilcox Go 'Over & Above' for United Way
The Babcock & Wilcox Companies are going "Over and Above" for United Way by offering round-trip air tickets to a lucky employee that increases their gift to United Way.  United Way's fourth largest supporter kicks off their campaign September 24th with a fun-filled month of special events.  The events begin with United Way Wednesday #1, by offering donors a work-time Snack Attack with specially delivered treats.  There will be early bird drawings for those who turn in their pledges by September 26th and October 4th.  United Way Wednesday #2 will offer an interoffice mail that will "light" up the day, an Appreciation Lunch with pizza, and a chance to compete in the new United Way game show that will wrap up the campaign.  Sharyn McCaulley and her outstanding committee make every year a great year for employees of this company whose giving has increased 25% in the last three campaigns.

Target Holds Ice Cream Social
Target Store #988 held an ice cream social for their employees as part of their United Way campaign.  The event was held all day on Friday, September 14th.  The campaign coordinator Amy Fultz (right), who works in the Pharmacy at Target, planned the event and Marcia Van Horn (left) assisted.  Thanks Target!

Your United Way Donations Improve Lives...

United Way Funded Program Helps Mother Reunite with Children
Through a Development Fund Grant, the United Way is funding a program of a new agency called Grandparents Against Sexual Predators, or GASP.  The director of GASP spoke at a staff meeting of the Battered Women's Shelter (also funded by United Way).  After learning about GASP, a resident of the shelter decided to utilize one of their programs and had her children fingerprinted.  The resident shared the ID cards containing the children's fingerprints and pictures of the children with the shelter staff.

Only two weeks later her children were kidnapped by their father from the church daycare while their mother was worshipping. He transported them over state lines by the morning.  That morning while the mother was fairly hysterical with fear, the shelter manager sat calmly with the police at the shelter making copies of the ID cards with the fingerprints and photos for the police to use in their investigation.  One of the photos even included a picture of their father/kidnapper!

Thanks to the ID cards, the children were located and the shelter was able to assist the mother with a plane ticket to fly out of state to pick up her children.  Thanks to the grassroots action that GASP has started with United Way funding, families are being helped.  Your donation really does make a difference!
