Local AFL/CIO, United Way to Honor Community Volunteers at Dinner
Akron/Medina County Labor Council, AFL-CIO and United Way of Summit County will serve as co-hosts for the annual Community Service Awards Dinner on Wednesday, June 6th, beginning at 6:00 pm at the Hilton Akron/Fairlawn, 3180 W. Market Street. United Way of Summit County and Organized Labor have a long history of working together to make our community a better place to live, work and raise a family. This year's honorees are Rose Juriga, who will receive the Peter Bommarito Award, and Don Bingman, who will be presented the Leo E. Dugan Award.

Rose Juriga is the executive director of the Tri-County Independent Living Center, Inc. Since joining the organization in 1990, she has grown the organization from its grassroots beginnings to the progressive, vital advocacy and service agency it is today.  From the offices in Akron, Rose provides leadership, vision and guidance in directing the organization in its mission to serve people with disabilities in Summit, Stark and Portage County. During her 17 years at the helm, she has increased the organization's funding base from $75,000 to more than $400,000.

The 2007 Leo E. Dugan Award will be presented to Don Bingman. Don is a 39-year member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, Branch 148. Although he retired in 2003, he is still active in the Union.

He has served terms as Steward at North Hill Station for 10 years, Trustee for 2 three-year terms, and currently is the Treasurer of Branch 148, a position he has held from 1991 to the present. Don is active in the NALC Food Drive, which has collected over one million pounds of food, locally, since its inception in 1993.  He is a graduate of the Tri-County Regional Labor Council, AFL-CIO Union Counselor class, jointly sponsored by the United Way. Like his mentor and friend, Julian O’Neill the 1996 Leo Dugan Award winner, Don was coordinator of the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon from 1990 to 2001, Jerry's Kids Labor Day annual event.

Run a 2007 Pacesetter Campaign
As a Pacesetter for the 2007 Annual Campaign you set the pace for everyone else!  Running your campaign in the late summer has great advantages, including energizing your employees half-way through the year, taking advantage of the warm weather for special events and breathing new life into your traditional fall campaign.

Pacesetters receive unique recognition opportunities through media and our website and will be invited to our campaign kick-off event as a special thank you.  Pacesetter campaigns should be completed by September 14, 2007.  Your United Way representative will review your campaign history and determine a realistic goal for your 2007 campaign.  The goal is based on increasing participation by 5% or increasing campaign growth by 10%.

If your company would like to run a Pacesetter Campaign, contact Katie Rennard, Vice President Resource Development at 330.643.5517 or email krennard@uwsummit.org Learn more about being a Pacesetter.

Take your Employees from Good to Great with the Loaned Executive Program
One of the most comprehensive management training programs
in the county is at United Way!

United Way of Summit County's Loaned Executive Program should be in your leadership development toolkit. Polish your best and brightest employees while raising millions of dollars to benefit our community.

The United Way Loaned Executive program provides intensive training in sales and public speaking, high visibility for your company, increased community awareness and commitment, and a direct, positive impact on the community and help for those who need it most.  Loaned Executives work on site at United Way for 12 weeks from August 27 through November 16 as fundraisers and community spokespersons for our annual campaign, but continue to be compensated by their employer.

Your company can get involved by enrolling a current employee in the program,  enrolling a retirement candidate, or providing a tax-deductible sponsorship of $3,000 or $1,500 (co-sponsor) to be used to hire a qualified candidate.  For more information about the Loaned Executive Program contact Katie Rennard, Vice President Resource Development at 330.643.5517 or email krennard@uwsummit.org

Meet the Team

Brenda Cox has been a Manager in the Community Impact Division of United Way of Summit County for 11 years.  She began her career as a summer intern and Loaned Executive in 1995.

Brenda's work in Community Impact includes working as a liaison to the Affiliated Agencies, Development Fund and Community Investment Teams.  She is also Program Manager for Project Blueprint, United Way's volunteer development program designed to help organizations become more inclusive, responsive and reflective of the culturally diverse community they serve.

UWSC President Bob Kulinski said, "In addition to her work with the Community Impact team,  Brenda has led the Project Blueprint program from its inception to its standing today as the leading minority leadership training program in our community.  We're so proud to have Brenda as part of our team."

Originally from Brooklyn, NY, Brenda came to Akron for graduate school, enjoyed the community and the people so much, she decided to stay.

In her spare time, Brenda is an avid reader, knitter and enjoys doing those things while traveling.

Make a Difference in the Lives of Others
At United Way of Summit County we know our donors want to make a difference now in the lives of others. In addition to their annual gift, many long-time donors choose to remember United Way in their Will or estate plan in order to help meet the challenges and opportunities that the future will deliver.

This is done simply by inserting a "charitable bequest" in your Will and stating that a certain dollar amount -- or a percentage of your estate after you have remembered friends and loved ones -- shall pass to United Way. When you draft or revise your Will, your attorney will know how to handle the wording for the charitable bequest to United Way of Summit County.

All bequests to United Way are tax-deductible and benefit neighbors and friends close to home. Please remember that you need not be wealthy to make a meaningful bequest to United Way. Regardless of the amount, your bequest will be an investment in the future of our community.

Have you already remembered United Way in your Will or estate plan? Please let us know so we can honor your generosity and recognize you as a member of the Evergreen Society. For more information visit our website at www.uwsummit.org and click on "Planned Giving" or contact Charlene Corlett, Vice President Major Gifts, at 330.643.5537 or ccorlett@uwsummit.org.
