More Than 1,200 Volunteers Participating in 'Day of Caring' Today!
For the twelfth consecutive year, United Way of Summit County is hosting 'Day of Caring' on Friday, June 15, 2007.   This year, 1,267 volunteers from 59 area businesses and corporations will take the day off from work and volunteer on 97 projects at 73 nonprofit organizations.  FirstEnergy Foundation is the sponsor of the 2007 event.

In addition to those participating in Day of Caring today, approximately 160 Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. employees provided two days of volunteer service at Camp Y-Noah on June 7 and 8.

A Kickoff Rally/Celebration was hosted by the Jerry Shaw Jewish Community Center, beginning at 8:00 am this morning.  United Way of Summit County Board of Trustees Chair Thom Mandel, President of the Rubber City Radio Group, welcomed and thanked the participants at the Rally.  Check our website for photos coming soon.

Women's  'Power of the Purse' Luncheon Scheduled
The United Way Women's Leadership Giving Society Annual 'Power of the Purse' Luncheon is set for Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at The University of Akron Martin Center, 105 Fir Hill.  Keynote speaker will be philanthropist Barbara D. Mathews, an active community volunteer and long-time supporter of United Way.

The program will also include a public roll-out of the Born Learning program. Born Learning is the Women's Leadership Giving Society's community initiative that helps parents, caregivers and communities in Summit County create quality early learning opportunities for young children from everyday experiences.

Elizabeth Bartz, President/CEO of State and Federal Communications, Inc., will be awarded 'Woman Philanthropist of the Year' by United Way's Women's Leadership Giving Society at the luncheon.  Elizabeth and her husband, John Chames, are long-standing supporters of United Way and have been Tocqueville Society members for three years.  In addition to encouraging outstanding United Way campaigns at her company, Elizabeth supports many community organizations including Visiting Nurse Service, WKSU, Matthew 25 House and Boys and Girls Clubs of Summit County.

The cost for the luncheon is $20 per person or $150 for a table of 8.  Click here to make your reservation online or call Barb at 330.643.5533 or email bstewart@uwsummit.org by Thursday July 5, 2007

Youth Art Contest Winners Announced

Winning students were presented with gift certificates for arts and crafts supplies at the Day of Caring Kickoff Breakfast.

According to Margaret Grimm, Resource Development Director, United Way introduced the Creative Arts Contest as a way to "raise awareness and familiarity with United Way within the student population." Thank you and congratulations to all the participants and the winners!

Take your Employees from Good to Great with the Loaned Executive Program
One of the most comprehensive management training programs
in the county is at United Way!

The United Way Loaned Executive program provides intensive training in sales and public speaking, high visibility for your company, and a direct, positive impact on the community and help for those who need it most.  Loaned Executives work on site at United Way for 12 weeks from August 27 through November 16 as fundraisers and community spokespersons for our annual campaign, but continue to be compensated by their employer.

Your company can get involved by enrolling a current employee in the program,  enrolling a retirement candidate, or providing a tax-deductible sponsorship of $3,000 or $1,500 (co-sponsor) to be used to hire a qualified candidate.  For more information contact Katie Rennard, Vice President Resource Development at 330.643.5517 or email krennard@uwsummit.org

Meet the Team

Barb Stewart has been a member of the United Way of Summit County team for almost 7 years.  She began her career here when the Volunteer Center merged with United Way in January 2001.

As the Marketing Division Administrative Assistant, Barb Stewart's responsibilities are as exciting as her upbeat personality and fun-loving spirit!  She helps to plan numerous events such as the Annual Meeting, Basketball Skills Competition and Knight Breakfast, as well as Docs Who RockTM and Chickenfest.  In addition, Barb helps out with many other United Way programs such as the Women's Leadership Giving Society luncheon and campaign events as well as coordinating agency tours and speakers.

According to Barb, the best part about working for UWSC is meeting new people, her variety of responsibilities, and knowing that her work will end up helping someone down the road.  Barb has proven to be quite an asset to the United Way team; President Bob Kulinski describes her as "one of our MVPs. She is enthusiastic, always pitches in to help where help is needed, always upbeat and joyful, and has a terrific work ethic. She adds much that is positive to the overall chemistry of our team, and we all appreciate her very much."

In her time away from work Barb is very active as well, working out three times a week (when she's good), and participating in outdoor activities such as camping and fishing.  Barb previously taught and competed in ballroom dance.  Reading mysteries and playing video games (Tomb Raider is her favorite) are also hobbies that Barb enjoys.

What is Planned Giving?
A "planned gift" to United Way of Summit County can help to ensure the future of important services and programs in our community.  What are planned gifts?  They include donations made through your Will, gifts of life insurance or retirement plans, or other gifts made through legal or financial instruments.  Here are some simple ways you can make a planned gift:

  • Bequest -- designate United Way as a beneficiary in your will;

  • Gift of Life Insurance -- designate United Way as a beneficiary in a life insurance policy that is no longer needed for its original purpose;

  • Gifts of Retirement Plans -- designate United Way as a beneficiary in your IRA.

All bequests or gifts from insurance policies will benefit neighbors and friends close to home and, regardless of the amount, your planned gift will be an investment in the future of our community.

The United Way of Summit County Evergreen Society was created to honor donors who help perpetuate the good work of United Way with a planned gift.  If you have already remembered United Way through an insurance policy or Will, please let us know so we can recognize you as a member of the Evergreen Society.  For more information visit our website at www.uwsummit.org  and click on "Planned Giving" or contact Charlene Corlett, Vice President Major Gifts, at 330.643.5537 or ccorlett@uwsummit.org.
