'Docs Who Rock' Seeks To Continue Growth
United Way of Summit County's Docs Who RockTM annual physician talent show will be held for the second consecutive year at The University of Akron's E.J. Thomas Hall. Docs Who Rock IV, (IV is both the Roman numeral four and a common medical term) scheduled for Saturday, October 13, 2007 at 7:00 pm, is an opportunity for local doctors to showcase their musical talents.

Docs Who Rock was held at the Main Library's 430-seat auditorium in 2004 and the 800+ seat theatre at North High School in 2005. In 2006, The University of Akron agreed to host the event at the beautiful E.J. Thomas Hall, and attendance at last year's show topped 1,600.

Because of growing interest from the region's many talented musicians and singers, musical acts will be asked to submit an application and support materials by June 22, 2007 to United Way of Summit County. A committee of musical experts, led by Docs Who Rock co-founder Dr. Terry Gordon, will select participating artists based on the information and materials available to them, so the applications should contain as much of the following as possible: current CD, audio and/or video tapes; press reviews/articles; posters/flyers; and a one-paragraph description of the group or artist.

As in the past, musical acts must have at least one member who is a Doctor (M.D. or D.O.) and who lives or practices in Summit County. Solo acts are also welcome, and all musical styles are encouraged to apply

United Way of Summit County President Bob Kulinski said, "The growth of Docs Who Rock has been extraordinary. We've trademarked the name and we've already licensed another United Way to produce a similar show in their community. Our collaboration with Dr. Terry Gordon and the partnership with Dr. Luis Proenza, Dave Osterland and the University of Akron have produced a signature event for United Way of Summit County."

Meet the Team

Brenda Farrell joined the United Way of Summit County staff in 2004, but she was a veteran of the United Way system.  She spent 20 years with the Barberton Area United Way, (14 as Chief Professional Officer) until that organization merged with the countywide UW.

She works in the Community Impact division of United Way and is currently shepherding our new web-based system -- Community TechKnowledge, Online Data Manager.

Brenda is a consummate United Way professional -- she says that what she loves most about her job is that "I can come here and do my work, and when I leave at the end of the day, I know that someone's life has been made better because of what I do.  That's a great feeling."

Bob Kulinski, President of United Way of Summit County commented "There were many benefits to our community and organization that resulted from the merger with the Barberton Area United Way three years ago. One of the best outcomes of that action was having the opportunity for Brenda to join our staff. She brings long and dedicated experience and good judgment, and is a real asset to our Community Impact Division and our entire organization."

Brenda and her husband of 37 years, Mark, are the proud parents of Dena, Scott and Jamie and the proud grandparents of Jacob, 10; Brayden, 9; Alayna, 7; and Brooke, 1 1/2.

Remember United Way In Your Will
Remembering United Way in your Will is one of the easiest ways to continue the impact of your annual gift.  People need not be wealthy to create a meaningful and lasting legacy.  When you draft or update your Will, your attorney will know how to handle the wording for the charitable bequest.  It can be as simple as inserting the following sentence: "I give and bequeath to United Way of Summit County, 90 North Prospect Street, Akron, OH the sum of $_____ dollars or ____% of my estate."

Have you already remembered United Way in your Will?   If you have, that makes you a member of the Summit County Evergreen Society.   Please let us know your gift intentions so we can recognize your generosity and invite you to an upcoming event to honor the members of the Evergreen Society.  For more information visit our website at www.uwsummit.org  and click on "Planned Giving" or contact Charlene Corlett at 330.643.5537 or ccorlett@uwsummit.org.
