United Way Unveils New Strategy to Become a Catalyst for Community Change

United Way of Summit County is reinventing itself. That’s the message Jim Mullen, United Way’s president and chief executive officer, gave at the organization’s annual meeting – themed “United Way Reimagined" – on Tuesday, April 19, at the John S. Knight Center in Akron. The organization’s new vision plan was presented along with ideas on how individuals and organizations can assure the plan’s success. Under its new vision, United Way hopes to be a greater catalyst for community change. That means more emphasis on community engagement, volunteerism and measurable community impact. Read more

Smart Start Sort-a-Thon and Baby Shower,
Wednesday, May 4

Volunteers will sort and package baby items from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Volunteers are also needed during the baby shower from 1 to 2:30 p.m. to distribute items to at-risk mothers. In addition to receiving necessities for their babies, mothers will visit education stations with information on car seat safety, infant safe sleep, breastfeeding, finding a pediatrician, nutrition and more. KaBOOM! Playground Build, Saturday, June 18
Let’s build a playground! In ONE day, volunteers from United Way of Summit County, City of Akron and Foresters will build an exciting new play space, designed by kids, for kids, at Suddieth Park in Akron’s North Hill neighborhood. The project is in partnership with KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit dedicated to giving kids the childhood they deserve by bringing play to those who need it most. Many volunteers are needed. Day of Action, Friday, June 17
United Way’s annual Day of Action mobilizes and inspires corporate and individual volunteers on the same day – across Summit County and in a highly visible way – to channel passion into action. Participate in community-changing, large-scale projects! Find out more

Power of the Purse Luncheon 2016

United Way Women's Leadership Council's annual Power of the Purse Luncheon will take place on Monday, June 20, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Quaker Station in Akron. The luncheon celebrates the power of women to transform their communities. Now in its 14th year, this signature event recognizes the extraordinary efforts of women philanthropists.

Ohio Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor will serve as keynote speaker for the event. The Barbara Mathews Woman Philanthropist of the Year Award will be presented to Jeannine Marks of Stewart’s Caring Place and co-founder of the Akron Marathon. This award recognizes a woman who has demonstrated a passion for helping others through her financial support and service to causes within the local community, including United Way of Summit County.
