Vince and Nancy DiGirolamo have been involved with United Way for more than fifty years, ever since Vince started out at National City Bank of Akron in the 1960’s. Since then, Vince served as National City Bank’s United Way – then called the United Fund – campaign coordinator, and eventually chaired United Way’s campaign cabinet.
Last year, the DiGirolamos took part in United Way’s Stuff the Bus volunteer event. Stuff the Bus brings together local businesses and volunteers to collect and distributes school supplies for Akron Public Schools. In 2017, Stuff the Bus collected 60,218 supplies, enough to give a backpack full of supplies to every student at 11 Akron public schools.
"We were delighted to hand out backpacks," says Nancy. "I amazed by how many volunteers were there, and by the children’s response to that. They were so excited to get the backpacks. I remember one of the kids saying, 'My mom and dad don’t have to go buy these things now.’ We learned so much watching the kids.” Together, the DiGirolamos agree that volunteering for United Way was a memorable experience, which they would recommend to others. "I would tell them to do it. That’s it. Just go and do it,” says Nancy.
"You’re going to get more out of it than you’re going to give in time and effort,” says Vince. "It’s really something."
