AmeriCorps VISTA Program with United Way
Since its founding more than 50 years ago, the AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) program has engaged thousands of skilled, passionate individuals in the fight to end poverty in America. Throughout a year-long, full-time commitment, VISTA members focus their efforts on building the capacities of organizations that fight illiteracy, improve health services, foster economic development, and otherwise assist low-income communities.
United Way of Summit County channels the passion and talents of these dedicated volunteers into concerted, lasting community impact. Since 2014, nearly 30 United Way-sponsored VISTAs have contributed tens of thousands of hours of service to the Summit County community.
VISTAs advance United Way’s mission to improve Education, Income and Health in Summit County by providing critical support to United Way programs and initiatives. These include the iC.A.R.E. in-school mentoring program, Imagination Library, and Bridges Summit County.
By serving as a United Way-sponsored VISTA, you can make a lasting difference. And, you’ll find the fulfillment that comes from using your knowledge and talents to help those in disadvantaged circumstances turn their dreams into reality.
Besides training and hands-on professional experience in the non-profit field, through AmeriCorps, VISTAs receive:
- Monthly living allowance
- Choice of educational award or post-service stipend
- Health benefit options
- Paid time off
- Child care
After completing their service, VISTA members also qualify for non-competitive eligibility towards employment with federal government agencies.
