VITA Volunteers Needed

You can help bring millions of dollars to local residents who need them. Free training and flexible shifts available.

Now recruiting vita volunteers for the 2023-2024 tax season

Every year, United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program brings in millions of dollars to the local community — dollars to help families jumpstart their savings, reduce debt and invest in their futures.

VITA depends on dedicated volunteers, who help local residents file their taxes and take advantage of programs like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). VITA is also an entry into other United Way services offered free through the Financial Empowerment Center, such as free one-on-one financial counseling.

IRS-certified training is free and volunteer shifts are available at different times and locations to fit your schedule. Want to make a difference in the lives of local residents? Become a VITA volunteer today!

They provide intake forms, explain the tax preparation process, copy client documents, answer general questions, and schedule follow-up tax appointments. Training requirement: Greeters will attend a 2-hour training session that does not include tax law certification.

TAX PREPARER

IRS-certified tax preparers interview clients and prepare Federal and State tax returns. Tax Preparers also provide referrals to other United Way financial empowerment programs, such as financial counseling and Bank On. Training requirement: Attend one full, 8-hour day of in-person training OR two 4-hour virtual sessions of live online training to prepare for the IRS certification exam. Additional training materials, practice sessions and resources will be available.

QUALITY REVIEWER

All tax returns are checked for accuracy prior to filing. Quality Reviewers ensure that all parts of the tax return are completed correctly. They also review completed returns with clients. Training requirement: Attend one full, 8-hour day of in-person training OR two 4-hour virtual sessions of live online training to prepare for the IRS certification exam. Additional training materials, practice sessions and resources will be available.
