United Way is Hiring New VISTAs to Expand
iCARE Mentoring Program
United Way will hire 14 new AmeriCorps VISTA coordinators and one VISTA leader to develop and expand the iCARE Mentoring Program, which provides nurturing role models to at-risk students in Akron Public Schools. VISTA members will serve a total 31,000 hours, providing a value of approximately $750,000 at no cost to APS.

at 2016 Annual Meeting
United Way of Summit County is reimagining itself. At its 2016 Annual Meeting, president and CEO Jim Mullen invited attendees to see United Way as more than a yearly fundraising campaign and to join the organization in transforming Akron and Summit County through concerted, collective community impact efforts. KaBOOM! Playground Build Needs Volunteers
United Way needs help for its first ever playground build, in partnership with KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit dedicated to giving kids the childhood they deserve by bringing play to those who need it most.

Volunteers will be needed throughout the three-day project at Suddieth Park in Akron’s North Hill neighborhood. 200 volunteers will team up to build the playground on Saturday, June 18. Additional volunteers will help with site preparation on Thursday and Friday, June 16 and 17. Let’s build a playground!

Power of the Purse Luncheon 2016
United Way will host its annual Power of the Purse Luncheon on June 20, highlighting the efforts of female philanthropists throughout Summit County. Ohio Lt. Governor Mary Taylor will serve as keynote speaker for the luncheon, which will include the presentation of the Barbara Mathews Woman Philanthropist of the Year Award to Jeannine Marks, director of development at Stewart’s Caring Place and co-founder of the Akron Marathon. Save the Date: Stuff the Bus Kickoff Event with the Akron RubberDucks
On June 26, United Way will kick off its annual “Stuff the Bus” school supplies drive with a RubberDucks game at 2:05 p.m. in Canal Park. Proceeds from ticket purchases via United Way will go toward classroom supplies for Akron Public School students. For more info, contact Julie Caruso at [email protected].
