VITA Volunteers Needed

Dedicated volunteers are needed to provide free tax preparation services to people with limited incomes. By helping working families take advantage of programs like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), you can help bring in millions of dollars to the local community -- dollars to help families jumpstart their savings, reduce debt and invest in our community. VITA is also an entry into other programs offered at the Financial Empowerment Center, such as free one-on-one financial coaching.

Benefits of volunteering:

  • Build your resume
  • Learn a new skill
  • FREE IRS-certified training
  • Flexible schedule
  • Continuing Education Credits for Attorneys, Enrolled Agents, and CPAs

Volunteer commitment:

  • Attend volunteer training
  • Pass an IRS Certification exam
  • Volunteer at least 5 shifts during tax season. Flexible and remote shifts are available.

Note: To volunteer remotely you need secure internet access and a computer.

IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers provide quality tax return assistance to taxpayers. Volunteers are also trained to provide referrals to other Financial Empowerment programs such as financial coaching and Bank On.
Training requirement: Attend 6 hours of live online training to gain knowledge to pass an IRS tax law exam. Additional training materials, practice sessions and resources will be available.

Greeters set a positive and friendly tone for all clients at the Financial Empowerment Center. Greeters also assist with answering general client questions and scheduling appointments. This role may change as COVID-19 progresses.
Training requirement: Greeters attend a 1.5-hour virtual training session, which does not include tax law certification.

Site Coordinators and Lead Volunteers are volunteers who have significant tax law experience or previous experience at a VITA site who manage the volunteer shift, quality review returns, and answer taxpayer and volunteer questions.
Training requirement: Must be a returning volunteer and attend 3-hour site coordinator training.

United Way of Summit & Medina’s highest priority is the health and safety of our community. We will be offering a variety service delivery and volunteers options. Clients and volunteers can choose which option is comfortable for them. Below is an outline of the type of appointments you may see this upcoming tax season.

Volunteers and clients would remain in the safety of their homes. Volunteers interested in volunteer remotely must have proper technology and be comfortable working independently. There will be a variety of roles with the virtual volunteer process based on comfort level.

Drive Through

This method allows for minimal contact between clients and volunteers. Clients will remain in their car during the appointment. Volunteers will be collecting tax documents and completing returns inside the building. Volunteers will be able to assist with this method from home if COVID-19 begins to spike.

We hope to offer limited in person appointments pending covid-19 cases. If we are able to offer these appointments masks and social distancing will be required. Separation panels between the client and volunteer are in place. Volunteer stations will be stocked with cleaning supplies and hand sanitizer. Additionally, will require temp checks for all clients and volunteers.
